Good news from the RECLAMA team!

We’re excited to announce that the RECLAMA team have secured a British Academy Maximising Impact grant for follow-up work on RECLAMA project, which officially concluded in November 2022. The follow up project, “RECLAMA: Visibilising Afro-Ecuadorian Women’s Heritage for Anti-racist and Sustainable Development” will allow the team members to reach additional audiences and enhance the impact of the RECLAMA project through a range of activities, including:

  • Developing educational materials that celebrate the rich and varied heritage of the Afro-Ecuadorian population, to strengthen ethno-education initiatives and promote positive representations of Afro-Ecuadorian women and girls in schools and the Ecuadorian curriculum;

  • A series of regional and international engagement activities, to further share the RECLAMA findings and outputs, and generate international visibility for positive narratives of Afro-Ecuadorian women and their heritage;

  • Engagement with local and national policymakers, government ministries, and civil society organisations to embedding anti-racist approaches in policymaking and practice, and increasing Afro-descendant women’s involvement in the public sphere.

The RECLAMA team are really pleased to be able to continue our collaboration and especially to continue to support and work with our peer researchers in Esmeraldas, who will also be involved in delivering the planned activities.

This follow-on project will also be supported by Latin America Bureau (LAB), allowing RECLAMA to benefit from LAB’s networks and connections within the UK and across Latin America, and their extensive knowledge and experience in awareness-raising and advocacy about social and environmental justice issues in Latin America. Working with LAB will enable learning from RECLAMA to reach a wide international audience.

The extended activities will run between March 2023 – February 2024 and will include a webinar in Spanish, English and Portuguese, as well as exhibitions and activities in Cali, Colombia and London, UK. This will enable us to engage with a wide range of audiences, and share the findings and outputs from RECLAMA both virtually and in person! We do not have confirmed dates for activities yet, so keep an eye on the RECLAMA website and social media for more information.
